In the spirit of togetherness and gratitude, Mrs. Owensby’s class came together with Mrs. Rhodes and Mrs. Phillips class to celebrate Thanksgiving in a unique and creative way. The event brought students together as Pilgrims and Native Americans, symbolizing the historic gathering that inspired the holiday. The centerpiece of the celebration was a collaborative snack-making activity inspired by the poem "Thanksgiving Story Mix."
The poem guided students through the preparation of a special snack that symbolized elements of the first Thanksgiving story. Each line of the poem introduced an ingredient, such as dried cranberries for “the berries Squanto taught the pilgrims to find;” pretzel rods for “logs to build their homes,” and chocolate chips for the “bittersweet life.” Once the snack mix was complete, the two groups shared it as they sat together for their feast.
The room buzzed with excitement as the children exchanged stories and laughter, fostering a sense of community, and understanding. The activity served as a powerful reminder of the values Thanksgiving embodies: gratitude, cooperation, and unity. By recreating the spirit of that first feast, the students not only celebrated history but also built friendships and memories that would last long after the day was over.
